📘 The 1/8th Rule

Real Speed (MB/s) = Advertised Speed (Mbps) / 8

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) always advertise in Megabits (Mbps) because the number is 8x larger than Megabytes (MB/s).

🧠 Bits vs Bytes

Bit (b): Used for Speed (Mbps).
Byte (B): Used for Storage (MB).
Note the capitalization! Small "b" is bits, Big "B" is Bytes.

✍️ Overhead

This calculator assumes 100% efficiency. In reality, you lose about 10% of speed to protocol overhead (TCP/IP headers). So if you have 100 Mbps, your real max is closer to 11 MB/s, not 12.5.

📊 Common Speeds

  • 100 Mbps: Fast enough for 4K streaming.
  • 300 Mbps: Good for families (multiple devices).
  • 1 Gbps (1000 Mbps): Fiber optic. Downloads 50GB games in minutes.

✅ Key Takeaways

  • Divide Mbps by 8 to get real download speed.
  • Check casing: Mb vs MB.
  • Wi-Fi is often slower than the plugged-in cable speed.
