Pilots use barometric pressure to determine altitude. If they forget to update the "Altimeter Setting" (e.g. 29.92), they might crash into a mountain because the altimeter will read potentially thousands of feet wrong.
Torricelli inverted a tube of mercury into a dish. The weight of the atmosphere pushed the mercury up the tube exactly 29.92 inches (760mm). That is why we measure pressure in "length" of metal!
